
La Paz Waterfall GardensLa Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park and Wildlife Refuge, you will discover one of the world's largest butterfly farm observatory here in Costa Rica. The Butterfly Observatory is the largest in the world, spanning the length of a football field and reaching heights of 50 feet (15 meters). This enclosed structure allows butterflies to soar freely while guests walk amid their habitat. Here you can observe 22 different butterfly species in their natural habitat, learning about their intriguing metamorphosis cycle; besides a fascinating hummingbird garden with 24 different species; a frog pond with nocturnal, diurnal and poisonous frogs; a serpentarium with 30 of the most beautiful snakes of the country, and an orchid garden in which stands the national flower. This splendid and popular nature and wildlife park, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. daily, $21 admission adults, $10 students and children, at Montaña Azul, about four km north of Vara Blanca. There is also a hummingbird garden, a rainforest wildlife exhibit, and orchid houses, all accessed by well-laid concrete trails that lead along the river to four waterfalls; educational posters line the trails. Standing on the viewing platform at the Templo Fall, you are pummeled by spray blasted from the base of the fall, a testament to its awesome hydraulic power. Continuing downriver, you get to a metal staircase that clings to the cliffside and takes you to the Magía Blanca, the largest cascade, Encantada, and La Paz falls. It is a daunting climb back. A short distance further downhill, at a tight hairpin bend in the road, a pencil thin fall that attracts Ticos en masse on weekends. The restaurant here has a veranda with marvelous views over the valley and forest. Continue to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui where you will board the boat to discover the richness of Costa Rica's nature along the river. The boat ride will last around two hours, plenty of time to witness the magnificent rainforest and its inhabitants, such as toucans, monkeys, sloths, crocodiles and many other species. At the end of this river adventure you will stop at a private farm to enjoy a home-style lunch. Then you can either hike on one of the nature trails or explore the surroundings on horseback. In the afternoon, before returning to the city, you will be able to enjoy the scenic drive through the exuberant Braulio Carrillo National Park.
